Kidney Yang Deficiency

The Kidneys are the root of Yin and Yang. Kidney Yang is the fire that warms and mobilizes fluids, driving transformation and activity in the body. When Yang is depleted, coldness, fatigue, and diminished vitality often appear.

Lower back pain, knee weakness
-
Fatigue, especially in the morning
-
Low libido or fertility challenges
-
Frequent, clear urination or nighttime urination
-
Swelling (edema) from fluids not transforming

Pale, swollen tongue
How It Develops
-
Chronic illness or long-standing Yin deficiency eventually weakening Yang
-
Aging – the natural decline of Kidney essence over time
-
Excessive sexual activity depleting Kidney fire
-
Overexposure to cold, or living in damp, cold environments
-
Overwork without rest
Lifestyle Support
-
Keep the lower back and feet warm
-
Avoid cold exposure, cold drinks, and excessive raw foods
-
Balance activity with rest, but avoid long periods of inactivity
-
Practices that “stoke the inner fire” – moxibustion, sun exposure, restorative qigong
Food Therapy
Choose warming, nourishing foods to support Kidney Yang:
-
Lamb, venison, beef, chicken with warming spices
-
Bone broths with ginger, onion, and garlic
-
Walnuts, chestnuts, black beans
-
Seaweed, dark leafy greens
-
Cinnamon, clove, nutmeg

Cooked, warming preparation methods like stews and roasts
